Description
In cases of a member of staff receiving a contaminated sharps injury or any other potentially infectious exposure to bodily fluids, the blood of the source patient is tested for HIV antibodies and p24 antigen, Hepatitis B surface antigen and Hepatitis C antibody and core antigen. Prompt infection control measures such as HIV post-exposure prophylaxis can be administered or stopped, where appropriate, or Hepatitis B vaccine (and IgG if necessary) can be administered.
