Quantiferon TB Gold assay

Description

Tuberculosis infection due to organisms belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex can be symptomatic or latent, both of which can be detected by this assay. The assay tests for cell mediated immune responses to peptide antigens that stimulate the mycobacterial proteins ESAT-6, CFP-10 and TB7.7(p4). Patients infected with a M. tuberculosis complex organism normally have lymphocytes in their blood that recognise these antigens. This recognition process involves the generation and secretion of the cytokine, IFN-g. The detection and subsequent quantification of IFN-g by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) forms the basis of this test. Results are used in conjunction with risk assessment, radiography and other medical and diagnostic evaluations.
